Roofing
Minnesota doesn’t go easy on roofs. Hail damage in particular is hard to see from the ground. The impact marks are there, but you usually can’t tell from the driveway. After a significant storm, a lot of homeowners aren’t sure whether they have real damage or not, and that uncertainty is exactly when contractors who don’t have your interests in mind show up.
We know what Minnesota weather does to a roof and we know how to assess it. Whether you’ve just had a storm and you’re trying to figure out what you’re dealing with, or it’s just an aging roof that’s due for a real look, we’ll get on the roof, go through everything, and tell you exactly what we find. We don’t steer people into a full replacement if they don’t need it.
What We Do in Minnesota
Most roof replacements in Minnesota are insurance work. Hail is the most common cause. It puts small impact marks on every shingle that add up fast. When the damage covers more than half the roof, insurance companies call it a total loss and cover full replacement. That’s our threshold too. If the majority of your roof is still in good shape, we’ll tell you that, even if it means a smaller job for us.
Full replacements are usually done in a day. We tell people to plan for two just in case. When we’re done, we do magnet passes for nails, clean the gutters, and make sure the yard looks like we weren’t there.
Not every damaged roof needs to be replaced. A failed flashing, a cracked valley, a section of shingles that took wind damage: these are repair jobs, and we treat them as repair jobs. If we get on the roof and the damage is isolated, we’re going to tell you that.
Repairs are also where a lot of contractors cut corners, because the work isn’t visible from the ground. We don’t. Your starter courses, shingle exposure, flashings, and valley work get the same attention on a repair as on a full replacement.
About 80% of our Minnesota work starts with a storm. We’ve run hundreds of claims and we know how the process works from the inside. Insurance companies send their own people to document the damage, and those people are not working on your behalf. We know how carriers document hail hits, where adjusters tend to come in short, and how to push back when they do.
Most claims close in around 30 days. Contested ones take longer, and we’ll tell you that before we start. You still have to be involved at certain points. Legally some things can only come from you. But we handle as much of the process as we can so you don’t have to learn a whole new language just to get your roof replaced.
Ice dams are a ventilation problem before they’re a roofing problem. When attic heat escapes unevenly, snow melts at the ridge and refreezes at the cold eaves. The ice backs up under the shingles and finds every gap it can. The visible damage comes later.
We look at ice dam situations the same way we look at everything else: find out what’s actually happening before recommending anything. Sometimes it’s a flashing failure. Sometimes it’s an attic ventilation issue that’s been shortening the life of the roof for years. We’ll tell you which one it is.
Minnesota Hail and Insurance Claims
Minnesota is one of the highest-volume hail states in the country. Most summers, somewhere in the metro takes a significant storm. The damage isn’t always obvious. Hail impact on asphalt shingles is documented up close with photographs, not visible from the street. A lot of homeowners aren’t sure whether what they saw warrants a call to their insurance company.
We’ve done this hundreds of times. We know what a solid claim looks like, we know what a weak one looks like, and we know the difference between damage that meets the threshold and damage that doesn’t. We’re not going to tell you to file a claim you can’t support.
If there is a claim, we manage the documentation, the adjuster meeting, and the back-and-forth with the carrier. If they come in short, we push back and explain why.

We hired Joe to be our main contractor after a tree fell on our shop wrecking the deck, the stucco and putting a hole in the roof, plus other misc damage. He did an excellent job managing the project. He handled everything with professionalism and plenty of communication which made the process a lot less stressful. He also did a lot if the work himself, his work was very well done and our shop turned out super nice! Thanks Joe!
Roofing Materials
The large majority of Minnesota roofs are asphalt shingles, and for good reason. They handle the freeze/thaw cycle well, they’re code-compliant, and installed correctly they last. We install CertainTeed as our preferred product. We think it’s a better shingle than most of what’s out there: better manufacturing tolerances, better warranty backing. We’ll get into why if you want to.
We also do metal roofing for homeowners who want it. And for projects that call for something more specialized, we do composite work too: composite shake, composite slate, and composite Spanish tile. We did a composite tile job on a 1920s house near Theodore Wirth Park that was originally built for clay. You’d have to get really close to tell the difference, but we do it right.
Privately Owned. No Outside Investors.
That One Construction Co. has no private equity, no outside investors, no growth targets driving recommendations. It’s a privately held company with no outside investors pushing for volume, and the same person who runs it talks to you about your roof.
A lot of national roofing companies that show up after a storm are backed by investment firms. Those firms have margin requirements, and margin requirements create pressure to recommend work that may not be needed. Our incentive is simpler: do the work right, tell the truth about what you find, and don’t recommend more than what’s needed.
Minnesota has strict building codes and inspections. Everything gets checked. In some states you can put a roof on and walk away. Here, the details matter, and the details are where we spend our time.
