On August 18, 2005, an F3 tornado tracked roughly 20 miles before reaching Stoughton, damaging nearly 200 homes, destroying 48 of them in the Waubesa Heights subdivision, and hitting luxury homes near the Stoughton Country Club particularly hard. One person was killed along the storm’s path.
Seventeen years later, on March 5, 2022, an NWS-confirmed EF-1 tornado with winds near 95 miles per hour touched down about four miles southeast of Stoughton and struck almost the exact same area the 2005 tornado had hit. Nearly 200 homes were damaged again, and separate straight-line winds of 70 to 80 miles per hour caused additional damage on the southwest side of the city. The mayor declared a state of emergency.
