Will definitely use them on our next home.Posted on Thumbtack Timothy P.Verified Joe Huber was helpful and communicated effectively. We highly recommend That One.Posted on Thumbtack Mary J.Verified We received three quotes for our roof and That One Construction Company was the most affordable option. Joe, the owner, had flexible hours for meetings (quote and going over the plan) and he was very knowledgeable understanding our needs. We needed our roof re-decked and there were other requests for new vents and covering old vents. We were very happy with the work and interactions with all the people associated with the company and we would recommend them to others.Posted on Thumbtack Cheryl M.Verified 5 Star!!! We hired Joe to be our main contractor after a tree fell on our shop wrecking the deck, the stucco and putting a hole in the roof, plus other misc damage. He did an excellent job managing the project. He handled everything with professionalism and plenty of communication which made the process a lot less stressful. He also did a lot if the work himself, his work was very well done and our shop turned out super nice! Thanks Joe!
Two Reasons Fitchburg Homeowners Call a Roofing Contractor
The first is storm damage, and Fitchburg has more of a documented history with this than most cities in this project. If you end up filing a claim, you won’t be figuring out the insurance side by yourself. Our team sits down with the adjuster, walks the estimate line by line, and flags it immediately if the number falls short of what the roof actually needs. That process starts with a free inspection, whether or not you file anything.
The second is a roof that’s simply reached the end of its life. Fitchburg is more renter-heavy than most of the villages nearby, with less than half of homes owner-occupied, so a lot of the roofing decisions here get made by landlords managing a property rather than someone living under it every day. Either way, we’ll tell you plainly whether a roof repair covers it or you’re looking at a full roof replacement, and we won’t push the bigger job if the smaller one does the trick.
The 2005 Tornado and 2026 Hailstorm in Fitchburg
On August 18, 2005, an F3 tornado first touched down near the Fitchburg/Oregon boundary at 6:15 PM. The state’s Oakhill Correctional Institute took heavy to total destruction, more than a dozen buildings gone and $5.2 million in damage. The tornado then tracked roughly 20 miles northeast, destroying 48 homes and damaging nearly 200 more in the Waubesa Heights subdivision before it reached Stoughton, where the damage got even worse. One person died along the path. It was part of the largest single-day tornado outbreak ever recorded in Wisconsin, 27 tornadoes in one day.
More recently, on the night of April 14, 2026, hail measuring 3.25 inches across, bigger than a hockey puck, was confirmed near Fitchburg. That’s the largest hail size documented anywhere in our research across this entire Wisconsin project. It was part of a wider regional storm system that moved through this stretch of Dane County that night, but the size of what hit Fitchburg specifically stands on its own. Hail activity here has also picked up sharply in the last couple of years, with 27 reports logged in 2025 and 22 already in 2026, well above the historical yearly average.
Neither event needs to repeat for your roof to need attention. Hail that size cracks and bruises shingles in ways that aren’t always visible from the ground, and wind damage from any storm since can go unnoticed the same way. A roof-level inspection is the only way to know for sure, and we offer that free.
What Fitchburg's Building Codes Actually Cover
Fitchburg has adopted its own commercial building code, the 2021 International Building Code and 2017 National Electrical Code, for larger commercial structures. That can make it sound like the city has its own rules for everything, but for a one- or two-family home, that’s not the case. Residential roofing here still falls under Wisconsin’s statewide Uniform Dwelling Code, the same as every other city in this project, not a separate Fitchburg-specific standard.
Under that statewide code, any roof slope of 4:12 or less over heated living space or an attached garage needs ice and water shield extending at least 30 inches up-slope from the eave and 12 inches past the interior wall face, and every contractor doing this work has to hold a Dwelling Contractor certification through the state. Permits go through Fitchburg’s own Building Inspection Department, which we handle as part of the job either way.
Why That One Construction Co. Is the Right Fitchburg Roofer
We look at a roof as part of a whole system, not an isolated repair. Joe built this company after years of building homes from the ground up, so drainage, attic ventilation, and how the flashing ties into the wall behind it all get checked, not just the shingles on top. On a home that’s been through what parts of Fitchburg have seen over the years, that whole-system view catches problems a single-trade roofer might miss entirely.
About 80% of what we do is insurance work, and in a city with Fitchburg’s storm history, that number matters even more than usual. We’ve built a team around it, people who spend their whole day on claims and can spot a lowball estimate on sight.
And when we’re done, we clean up like we mean it. Plywood on the garage doors before we start, landscaping protected, a magnet pass for nails when the job wraps. Making sure it looks like we weren’t there is the standard, not a nice-to-have.
