Roofing Contractor in Dane County, WI

That One Construction Co. is a roofing contractor serving Dane County, from Madison and its neighboring cities to the villages and farm country around them. We’re based in Madison, and whether your roof took a hit in a storm or is simply wearing out, we’ll inspect it, tell you what we find, and handle the work from the claim to the final cleanup.

80 Tornado Warnings in 20 Years: Dane County's Storm Record

Between 2005 and 2025, the National Weather Service issued 80 tornado warnings for Dane County, and 21 tornadoes touched down in the county over that same stretch. The strongest of them came in 2005, the same year the weather service counted 16 tornadoes across southern Wisconsin in a single outbreak on August 18.

Tornadoes get the headlines, but they’re only part of what Dane County roofs deal with. Straight-line wind lifts shingle tabs and peels back ridge caps. Hail bruises shingles and knocks the granules loose, and that kind of damage usually can’t be seen from the ground. Then winter brings months of snow load and ice building up at the eaves.

The April 14, 2026 Hailstorm Hit Dane County

On April 14, 2026, supercells developed over southern Wisconsin, and the National Weather Service reported giant hail over Dane County, with stones up to softball size in parts of the Madison area. Storm reports logged a 4-inch hailstone east of Maple Bluff and repeated reports of baseball-sized hail around Madison that evening.

Hail that size can crack a shingle outright, but plenty of the damage from a storm like this is quieter: bruised mats, lost granules, and dented flashing that can start leaking well after the storm has passed. If your roof wasn’t inspected after April 14, it’s worth having someone look before the next winter sets in.

Our experience was absolutely phenomenal from beginning to end, and we couldn’t be happier with our new roof/gutters. The estimate was clear, simple and there weren’t any surprises. I would highly recommend this That One Construction Company if you want expert work, done right, clear & concise communication, and no surprises. Will definitely use them on our next home.

Joe Huber was helpful and communicated effectively. A few employees made a mistake with the service date but cleaned up and were very friendly throughout the process, and then came on the correct date. Joe was open about cost and service from the start and That One Construction did the work for a fraction of the expected cost.

Joe was there when he said he would be, responded promptly to questions via text, and made my scheduling request work. The garage is re-roofed and my gutters are installed. Done and Done. No muss, no fuss and no unexpected costs. Thanks Joe!

Joe was incredibly responsive in getting me a fast quote and always responded quickly to my inquiries. His quote was very reasonable and gave me good advice on roofing options. The work was done the day he said it would be and the quality was excellent. Plus, he's a really easy person to get along with and is a genuinely nice guy. I won't hesitate to have him quote any future projects for me!

We received three quotes for our roof and That One Construction Company was the most affordable option. Joe, the owner, had flexible hours for meetings (quote and going over the plan) and he was very knowledgeable understanding our needs. We needed our roof re-decked and there were other requests for new vents and covering old vents. We were very happy with the work and interactions with all the people associated with the company and we would recommend them to others.

5 Star!!! We hired Joe to be our main contractor after a tree fell on our shop wrecking the deck, the stucco and putting a hole in the roof, plus other misc damage. He did an excellent job managing the project. He handled everything with professionalism and plenty of communication which made the process a lot less stressful. He also did a lot if the work himself, his work was very well done and our shop turned out super nice! Thanks Joe!

Two Reasons Dane County Homeowners Call a Roofing Contractor

Most calls we get come down to one of two situations.

The first is storm damage. After hail or high wind, the question is whether the damage is real and whether it’s covered. We start with a free inspection, document what we find, and if a claim makes sense, we work it with your insurance company from the adjuster’s visit to the final invoice. Sometimes the honest answer is a small roof repair, and we’ll tell you that too.

The second is age. Curling shingles, bare spots, a leak around a chimney or vent: these show up on roofs that are simply reaching the end of their life. A free inspection tells you whether you’re looking at a repair that buys a few more years or a full roof replacement, and what each one involves.

A County of Newer Homes and Established Neighborhoods

Dane County has about 265,000 housing units, and roughly 58% of them are owner-occupied. The median home was built in 1986, and more homes went up in the 2000s than in any other decade. That mix shows up on the roof: many houses from the 2000s may still have their original shingles and are getting close to a first replacement, while homes in the county’s older neighborhoods can already be on their second or third roof.

The median value of an owner-occupied home in the county is about $366,000. On a house worth that much, a roof replacement is a big decision, and it deserves a real inspection and a straight answer before any money changes hands.

One Roofing Code Countywide, Many Permit Offices

Wisconsin’s Uniform Dwelling Code is the statewide code for one- and two-family homes, and a reroof on a home it regulates has to meet its roofing rules. Its ice-dam rule, SPS 321.28(4), covers shingled roofs with a slope of 4:12 or less over heated living space or an attached garage. On those roofs, the ice-dam protection has to run at least 30 inches up the slope from the roof edge and at least 12 inches past the inside face of the exterior wall. A contractor who pulls the building permit also needs a Dwelling Contractor certification from the state.

Permits are a different story. Reroof permits are handled locally, and the details change from one community to the next: some use in-house inspectors, some contract inspections to outside firms, and a few add local rules that go beyond the state code. We check what applies to your address and pull the permit as part of the job.

Why That One Construction Co. Is the Right Dane County Roofer

We hold every inspection to a 50% rule. Insurance companies treat a roof as a total loss when half of it is damaged, and we use that same line for our own recommendation. If a storm hit one side of your house and the rest of the roof is sound, we’ll recommend a repair, even though a replacement would be a bigger job for us.

About 80% of our work is insurance claims, and we keep dedicated claims staff in-house. Working with insurance companies is what they do every day. They meet adjusters, push back on estimates that leave damage out, and stay with a claim through reinspections. Most claims close in around 30 days. Contested ones take longer, and we’ll tell you that at the start.

When the work’s done, the property should look the way it did before we arrived. Garage doors get boarded before tear-off, landscaping gets covered, and we run magnets over the yard and driveway for nails. Making sure it looks like we weren’t there is the standard on every job.
